We are a small team of developers who got tired of every SaaS looking like the same template. So we built the agent-legible design system for property inspectors, data grids, docks, command surfaces, node editors, and agent-operations consoles.
How we think about craft
Tools, not toys
Substrate began as a set of internal patterns we kept rebuilding across projects -- the dense data tables, inspector panels, and command palettes that professional software takes for granted and starter templates never include. We got tired of rebuilding them, so we turned them into a system.
The principle behind every component is simple: tools, not toys. Monochrome, dark-first, true neutral. Color is reserved for meaning -- status, selection, focus -- never decoration. If a component looks like it came out of a starter template, it is wrong, and we cut it.

The problem
Why all starters look the same
The number one complaint in every SaaS starter community: “my app looks like a template.” Because it is one.
Every competitor uses default shadcn
ShipFast, Supastarter, Makerkit -- they all ship with the same default shadcn components. Same border radius, same color palette, same button styles. Your users can tell. Your customers can tell. Your competitors can tell, because their app looks exactly like yours.
Custom components take months
Building a data grid with virtualization, a command palette with fuzzy search, an inspector panel with property editing -- each one takes weeks of dedicated development. Most solo developers and small teams do not have that time, so they ship with generic components and hope nobody notices.
Substrate is the answer
We extracted workspace rules from professional apps and packaged them as installable shadcn components for inspectors, data grids, docks, command surfaces, and node editors. Density, dark-first design, and true neutrals support the system instead of replacing it with another template.

We build tools that help you ship faster. Every component decision is filtered through one question: does this help someone launch something real? If the answer is no, we cut it.
Professional surfaces need coherent contracts
We studied how Linear, Figma, Raycast, and Unity compose property inspectors, data grids, docks, and command surfaces. SubstrateUI turns those rules into an agent-legible system, with density available as a supporting capability across every surface.
Open source foundation
The 35+ primitive components are open source and free forever. No bait-and-switch, no paywalling basics. Premium components earn revenue by being genuinely worth paying for -- not by locking down what should be free.
Own your code
Every Substrate component is installed directly into your project. No runtime dependencies, no CDN calls, no lock-in. If we disappear tomorrow, your application keeps working exactly as it does today.

How we got here
2022
The same template, everywhere
Every SaaS we opened looked identical -- the same default components, the same border radius, the same palette. The tools people shipped looked nothing like the tools professionals actually use to build. That gap is where Substrate started.
2023
Studying the professionals
We took apart how Linear, Figma, Raycast, Spline, and Unity handle information density -- inspector panels, command palettes, tree views, multi-panel layouts. Not screenshots to copy, but the underlying rules that make dense interfaces feel calm instead of cramped.
2024
Substrate UI begins
We formalized those patterns into a system: three density modes, a true neutral palette, dark-first chrome, and workspace components that scale from consumer-spacious to IDE-compact with a single prop. Built on shadcn/ui v2, owned as copy-paste code.
2025
A public registry
Substrate ships as installable shadcn components through a public registry. Add a component with one command, own the code outright, and update on your own schedule. Tools, not toys -- and never anything that looks like it came out of a starter template.
Business model
Open source + premium
The foundation is open source: 67 primitives including buttons, inputs, selects, dialogs, and data tables. All density-aware, all dark/light mode compatible, all free forever.
Finished Pro composition — data-wired blocks, coordinated workspace patterns, multi-panel layouts, and full app templates — is available for one $179 purchase. The model is consumption free and authoring paid.
